Walk into any gold shop in the UAE and you will hear the same numbers: 18K, 21K, 22K, 24K. The karat is the single biggest factor in how a piece looks, wears and costs — yet it is rarely explained simply. Here is the short version, from a family that has traded gold in the UAE since 1999.
What “karat” actually means
Karat measures purity out of 24 parts. 24K is pure gold, hallmarked 999. 22K is 22 parts gold out of 24 — 91.6%, hallmarked 916. 21K is 87.5%, hallmarked 875. 18K is 75%, hallmarked 750. The rest of the alloy is other metals — silver, copper, palladium — added for strength.
That one number decides three things at once: the higher the karat, the deeper the yellow, the higher the price per gram — and the softer the metal. Those three trade off against each other, which is why there is no single “best” karat, only the right karat for the job.
24K — pure gold, for bars rather than bracelets
Pure gold has the deepest, most amber-toned yellow — and it is soft enough to bend and scratch in normal wear. That is why 24K belongs in bars and coins, where nothing has to hold a shape, a clasp or a stone. 21K — the warm classic of the Gulf
21K keeps the rich, saturated yellow the region has always associated with real gold (most eyes cannot tell 21K and 22K apart without reading the hallmark), while being slightly harder than the higher karats. That balance made it the traditional choice for pieces worn often — and it remains the karat many families ask for by name for weddings and occasions. 18K — the everyday-wear karat
At 75% gold, 18K carries enough alloy to be noticeably harder than the karats above it. It holds its shape, takes a high polish, and shrugs off the small knocks of daily life — which is why it is the standard of international fine jewellery. It is also the karat that makes colours possible: yellow, white and rose, and pieces that combine two or three tones.

Doesn’t a higher karat mean better quality?
It means purer, not better. A 24K ring would bend within months; an 18K ring will look right years from now. Purity and durability pull in opposite directions — the right karat depends on what the piece is for.
Why does the same design cost less in 18K?
Gold is priced by weight and purity. An 18K piece simply contains less pure gold per gram than a 21K one — you pay for exactly the gold you get, which is also why we show the weight beside the price on every product page.
