The ring is chosen, the finger is not measured. It is the most common reason people hesitate to give a gold ring — and it has two reliable solutions you can do at home in five minutes, plus a third for when the ring is a surprise.
Method 1: measure a ring that already fits
The most accurate home method. Take a ring that is already worn on the same finger the new ring is for, lay it on a ruler, and measure the widest distance across the inside of the band in millimetres. That inner diameter is the size: 16.5 mm is roughly a size 52 (US 6), 17.3 mm a size 54 (US 7), 18.1 mm a size 57 (US 8). Measure two or three times and trust the repeated number.
Method 2: a strip of paper
Cut a thin strip of paper, wrap it around the base of the finger where the ring will sit, and mark where it overlaps. Measure the length in millimetres — that is the finger’s circumference, and in most sizing systems the circumference in millimetres is the size: 52 mm around means size 52. It should be snug but still slide over the knuckle.
The small details that make it accurate
- Measure at the end of the day. Fingers are slimmest in the morning and in air conditioning, fullest in the evening and in summer heat — which matters in the UAE.
- Mind the knuckle. If the knuckle is noticeably wider than the base of the finger, size for something in between: the ring must pass over the knuckle without spinning loosely below it.
- Wide bands fit tighter. For a broad band, consider going up half a size from the measured number.
- Hands differ. The dominant hand usually runs slightly larger — measure the hand the ring will actually be worn on.
When the ring is a surprise
Borrow, quietly, a ring she already wears on the right finger and measure it as in method one — or press it into a bar of soap and measure the circle it leaves. A sister or close friend often knows the size outright; it is worth one discreet question. And when in doubt between two sizes, take the larger — a slightly loose ring is wearable while a tight one is not.
