The pendant and the chain are one decision
A pendant is only ever as good as the chain it hangs on. A heavy pendant on a fine chain drags, sits badly and wears through at the bail. A delicate pendant on a thick curb chain disappears. As a rule, the chain should look like it could carry the pendant comfortably and no more than that.
If you already own the chain, check the width of the bail — the little loop at the top of the pendant — before choosing. A narrow bail will not pass over a wide chain.
Scale: smaller than you think
Worn on a person, a pendant reads about a third larger than it does in your hand. A piece that looks modest on the counter is usually the right one. If you are buying for someone whose taste you do not know precisely, err small: a fine piece gets worn every day, and a bold one waits for occasions that may not come.
Match it to the neckline
- Open and V-shaped necklines suit a pendant that drops — the shape of the neckline and the drop of the chain agree with each other.
- High and round necklines suit a shorter chain, so the pendant sits above the fabric rather than on it.
- Layering works when one pendant leads and the others stay plain. Two pendants competing at the same height rarely looks considered.
Choosing one as a gift
Meaning travels further than size. An initial, a birth month, an evil eye, a name in Arabic — these get worn for years, because the person wearing it is not just wearing gold, they are wearing something about themselves. If you are unsure of the chain length, a pendant on its own is a safe gift; the chain can be chosen afterwards, together.
