Gold for the wrist comes in two great traditions: the bracelet and the bangle. They share a home but not a character — one drapes, the other holds its circle. Knowing which suits the person (and how each one is sized) makes the choice easy.
What is the difference?
A bracelet is flexible — a chain of links closed with a clasp. It follows the wrist, moves with it, and sits close.
A bangle is rigid — a solid circle of gold that slips over the hand, no clasp at all. It keeps its perfect round shape and moves along the arm with a life of its own. In our region the solid bangle is its own tradition, worn singly or in a gently ringing stack. A cuff is its open-ended cousin, with a small gap that lets it slide onto the wrist from the side.
The case for a bracelet
A bracelet is the more forgiving gift: many close with adjustable links, it drapes softly under a sleeve, and a charm or pendant detail personalises it. Chain bracelets in curb, rope or Singapore patterns wear exactly like their necklace counterparts — flat, durable and everyday. For a first gold gift, a light chain bracelet is one of the safest choices there is.
The case for a bangle
A bangle brings presence. One slim solid bangle worn daily becomes part of the hand’s silhouette; two or three together are the classic sound of gold in this part of the world. There is no clasp to fiddle with and nothing to snag — and a well-made bangle keeps its circle for decades.
Getting the size right
- Bracelet: measure the wrist snugly with a strip of paper, then add 1.5 to 2 cm for a comfortable drape. Most women’s bracelets run 17–19 cm.
- Bangle: the wrist is not the measurement — the hand is. Tuck the thumb toward the palm and measure around the widest part of the hand; the bangle’s inner circumference must be at least that. If it passes the knuckles, it fits.
Wearing them together
Bracelets and bangles stack happily — the trick is restraint. One flexible chain against one or two slim bangles gives movement and sound without clutter; keep to one textured piece per wrist and let the rest stay smooth. Lightweight 18K pieces are made for exactly this kind of easy, everyday layering.
Quick answers
Which is better for daily wear?
Both wear well in 18K. A bracelet is the more practical under long sleeves and at a desk; a bangle is the more carefree — nothing to open, nothing to lose.
Which do I give when I don’t know her size?
A chain bracelet with an adjustable clasp is the safest. And whichever you choose, every piece can be exchanged within 15 days at our Sharjah branch.
